Reviews Of Gigs Past
Venue-Roydon Village Hall Date-28th August, 2002
Bands-Mark, Sadarko, Fur Elise, Cheesegrater
Review-another headlining slot for us and our best yet! though that isnt really saying much considering our previous performances when faced with such responsibilty! a rushed rehearshal at the ridiculous hour of 11.00AM with hardly any amps was meant to set us up for playing but as we all know when it comes to a cheese gig anything can and will go wrong! Once again we had Rupert playing on drums for his first gig as an official member and his 3rd gig overall (only 1 rehearshal though) and Stebbs' dad took over rhythm guitar for hurry up harry showing that the rock star gene is indeed hereditary! this gig also boasted a kinky skool girl competition, with the prizes being stolen early on however by alky skool girl sweetpea, the only prize we could offer was to come and dance with us onstage...and so they did! along with various peeps from other bands and a general cheese following! we messed up lots but managed to stumble our way through the new song "love sucks, buy a playstation"! so we probly sucked but we all laughed and danced funny, oh, and stebbs appeared for the first time since the lopham gig without his guitar! anything else? ummm...we were drunk! more skool girls at the next gig please!
Set-all the oldies plus loves sucks, buy a playstation

Bands-Cheesegrater, Fall down laughing, Mustard Bandits, When pets go bad, Clench
Review-this gig was for the opening of a skate park somewhere near Norwich and we were playing with bands that were all a lot more talented than us and had probably had a rehearshal in the last 2 months. We however were playing on no rehearshals in ages with Roo once again taking to the drums to replace a once again absent Al. So the set was once again turned into the cheesegrater comedy experience. We fucked up half the songs, greg was introduced as being gay, Stebbs kept disapearing to get beer and didnt actually play guitar for the first half of the set because the amp he was using kept cutting out, everyone had been drinking all day apart from Roo n Stebbs who caught up during the set and new honourary member Dom performed a soothing whale noise solo during Kickback! Not that any of it mattered because hardly anyone turned up anyways, it was pretty much just bands playing to each other and while everyone else took it seriously...we did not! Although full marks to the Mustard Bandits for being ace despite singer/guitarist Ryan being at a Bryan Adams concert, so Dan had to cover for both guitars and do his own backing vox...oh and they let Roo chug a litre plus of cider onstage during one of their songs! Offstage more fun was had as the sticks crew (thats us) caused "havoc" outside and apparently made the front cover of some local paper for being drunken disorderly, Roo also got his details taken by some annoying police for pissing on a bush and was told that he was going to have to go to court! We all got threatened by these self same police for being too drunk and told that the next person to swear would be arrested, to which stebbs replied "f*%k that!"....oops! Anyway, it was a laugh and i believe we played it as it should have been played!
Set-Fuck knows, i cant remember!

Bands-Wild Stallions, Mourgan, Septico Peni, Drift, Cheesegrater, Dr Love, etc, etc
Review-this was one of them thar SN sound thingymajigs where they have loadsa bands playing, though this time was a bit bigger because they had an indoor acoustic stage and a dj at the end of the night. We were playing stupidly late in the day for some strange reason, but that turned out to a good thing since Stebbs got the wrong train back from Norwich following Smoothfest and ended up in Ipswich. I really don't want to say much about the performance because we sucked nearly as much as we did at the park hotel. the introduction said it all really, "hello everybody, there's been a lot of quality bands playing here today, unfortunatly that's all about to change. hi, we're cheesegrater". Stebbs lead was incredibly dodgy and kept breaking, he also had to push a button on the amp to change to the tinniest distortion ever, matt n matt were left mic-less and just had to shout as loud as they could, gregs bass was largely inaudible for the duration and stebbs couldnt be arsed to sing the proper words....having said that, it was fucking funny.
Set-can't remember, but we didnt play any new songs

Bands-Moondolly, Lizzies peaks, Cheesegrater, Mustard Bandits
Review-what a lovely gig this was and well organised too, despite Rupert having to stand in on drums for us because Al was playing with scene supergroup Dr Love at some high school prom or suffin. We turned up with a large amount of alcohol in the form of san miguel and bishops finger and got nicely merry quite early on while I tried to teach rupert all the cheesegrater set with just the use of one guitar and a park bench. Also we had a lovely sing song before the gig with the other bands, including a full recital of bohemian rhapsody by queen, which was nice. Moondolly kicked the night off with a suprisingly good set considering they havent rehearsed in months, also it was sadly there last ever gig. Then Lizzies peaks took to the stage and much fun was had, aat this stage my memory starts fading but i remember dancing to them. Then we staggered onstage with our new drummer rupert almost hysterical with joy at being able to play with his childhood idols. The set went well as far as i can remember and it was all very fun coz the atmosphere was sweet. We also had an onstage drinking competition going on between sweetpea and Will from moondolly, which was all fun. Unfortunately halfway through the set i was passed a bottle of blue aftershock which i chugged on for a bit and i cant actually remember leaving the stage...which was nice. we also played a cover of fuck her gently by tenacious d and a few scrumpys songs too, plus an onstage argument about what film is best, neverending story or labyrinth, all added to the fun (its obviously neverending story). Then we finished the set off with some walk this way drumming by roo to our set finisher white lightning. lovely jubbly. the mustard bandits, as always, rocked and i forced dan to eat lard onstage which was also good. oh yeah, plus they shaved Doms hair into a mullet, sweet.
set-Would you like some cheese?, Comic shop guy, White lightning, Hurry up harry, Neverending story, 15 second song, Ruperts tale, Kickback, The A school of punk, Squeal, I am the one and only, fuck her gently, bailey is a fisherman, nerd rock
Venue-Bogeys house, Harleston Date-June 1st 2002
Bands-Morgan, Septico penae, Cheesegrater, The Scrumpys
Review-hmmmm, not sure really wether to include this gig in this section coz it was more of a party where there just happened to be instruments that people messed about on......but I will anyway. Originally the mustard bandits and kneehigh were also meant to play but they didnt turn up, so local anarcho boys, septico penae, and chick rockers, Morgan stepped up to take their respective places in the line-up! Septico played a particularly memorable gig with Alec rolling on the floor screaming while blind drunk for most the set (it was at this point where Stebbs was advised, by Taylor, to up his drink intake before the cheese played so that he could match this energetic young punkers performance), also towards the end Charlie and George fucked off so our Stebbsy took over on guitar and scrumpys member Rupert gallantly took charge of the bass for a couple more songs! As the sun began to sink below the horizon, cheesegrater sneaked onto the stage(well, garden, technically) and began to drunkenly string together chords and shouted vocals! Can't remember if we played well but Bogeys garden may have suffered some severe damage from people forming a circle pit around the sapling tree and the circle pit that formed around Rupert for "Ruperts tale" left him in a dazed heap on the floor with his under-pants ripped to shreds. We missed out about half our set, i think, and probably fucked up most the songs, but we were just having a laugh really anyway, its not like anyone took it seriously! After us the scrumpys, quite literally, took over the stage to play their only two songs and random bits of other stuff, like "girl from mars" and "walk this way"! They ruled....ok, ok, calm down guys! They(we-stebbs, sweetpea, benae, rupert) probably sucked, but give us time and we'll be the new Tenacious D!
Set-can't remember although i think we played our new song, "love sucks, buy a playstation"
Venue-Diss community centre Date-April 19th 2002 Bands-Septico penae, Cheesegrater, Acidseed Review-The gig which was said to be the last ever by cheesegrater due to in-band fighting...ummm, i mean musical differences, actually turned out quite well and quite possibly put the cheese back on track(although this is yet to be confirmed)! The nights fun started early with Stebbs turning up to soundcheck being pushed by Boast in a Safeway trolly! Septico penae kicked the night off to an anarcho start with 30 mins of raging punk tunes including a new track entitled "septic penis fuck off", a rant against the metal septic penis who are the reason for their recent name change! Then cheesegrater made their entrance to a rather violent(but fun) pit and played their usual punky fun set! Once again we had lesbian dancing on stage, plus this time they made out on stage aswell!!!!!!yay!, the cheesegrater choir took to the stage for an extended version of white lightning and we were also presented with a "cheesegrater raw" video as a breaking up present (thanx for that sweet and roo, you know we love you!)! We had such a good time that we even decided that the possibilty of carrying on was not out of the question....watch this space! Acidseed also played a good gig although due to people fucking off down the park to drink cider, they were met with a sadly dimished crowd! Set-Would you like some cheese?, Comic shop guy, White lightning, Hurry up harry, Neverending story, 15 second song, Ruperts tale, Kickback, The A school of punk, Squeal, I am the one and only
Venue-Wortham Village hall Date-April 1st 2002 Bands-Acidseed, Motard, Cheesegrater Review-A second headlining slot(this time at a Motard organised event) for cheesegrater and quite possibly another ill advised one was advertised as featuring "the almighty cheesegrater".....we sucked, but hell we had fun! Al was wasted way too early on after downing a full bottle of red wine and an uncounted amount of cans of stella while Stebbs took an early trip down to the local pub with Septic penis frontman Alec and cheesegrater regulars Sweetpea and Rupert! But all was not lost as cheesegrater arrived on stage following impressive sets by both Acidseed and Motard(who both rocked my world), made even more impressive by an Acidseed cover of "Would you like some cheese?"! We played badly(as far as I can remember) but we all had a laugh with many cheesegrater antics......we played a new song about rupert choosing beer over getting head, Ceg, Boast, Milo and Bogey sang guest vocals on White Lightning, Al fell asleep on the drums in between songs(a punk rock moment that should go down in history), we played a karaoke cheesegrater bit to fill out our set (including such hits has "if you tolerate this your children will be next" by manic street preachers, "Nothing" by A, "hotal yorba" by white stripes and fans favourite "hero" by enricha englasias) and Stebbs wore Cegs glasses to complete his Emo image(despite his vision being screwed up by them just to show how dedicated he is to the emo scene!)! So overall it was a laugh and very fun although it will be a while untill cheesegrater agree to headline again, especially over bands with actual musical talent! Set-Manga theme, Would you like some cheese?, I am the one and only, Comic shop guy, Neverending story, Kickback, the A school of punk, Ruperts tale, 15 second song, cheesegrater karaoke session,Squeal, Hurry up harry, White lightning
Venue-Harleston Apollo Rooms Date-March 22nd 2002 Bands-Septic penis, cheesegrater, Mark, Dangermouse, Guest Review- A heavy drinking session the night before this gig left vocalist Stebbs and pretty boy Greg with a matching pair of killer hangovers which refused to wear off before cheesegraters set, making this gig almost painful for the two young pissheads. Aside from that, it was actually quite a fun night. Septic penis played an anarcho fuelled set of their own songs and even a kickass cover of Banned from the Roxy by Crass!Mark again showed off his impressive and relaxing (compared to the previous two bands) set. Dangermouse played superbly, filling the dance floor with crazy pelvic thrusting teenagers and Guest were emo-tastic! Cheesegrater also boasted a new half song which they had never attempted to play before but actually went alright, Taylor played topless(although it has been heavily debated as to wether this was a good or bad idea), we had girls erotic dancing onstage and cheesegrater regulars Boast and Rupert sung guest vocals on White Lightning! whup ass! Set-Manga theme, Would you like some cheese?, I am the one and only, Comic shop guy, Neverending story, Kickback, Squeal, White lightning, 15 second song, Hurry up Harry, the A school of punk, We know we suck!
Venue-Roydon village hall Date-March 22nd, 2002 Bands-Mustard Bandits, Acidseed, Cheesegrater, Mark Review-This Acidseed organised gig was originally advertised as including Fur Elise in the line up with cheesegrater taking the position of first band of the night but due to injury to their bassist they were forced to pull out. Luckily though Mark Hewitt was on hand to perform an acoustic set which meant that cheesegrater were promoted to play second. Yay! The atmosphere at this gig was intense with well over a hundred people turning up to support the local bands playing and almost all of them joining in the dancing fun at some point during the night.Indeed, we also spotted a few homemade cheesegrater t-shirts being worn by various people including a rather dashing "would u like some cheese?" shirt worn by Hamish. Cheesegrater got to play to one of the largest pits ever seen at a local gig and much fun it was too! Everything seemed to go right, we played well (with a few trademark mistakes of course), the pit was jumping, we got knickers thrown at us and even the new hardly rehearsed song "the A school of punk" went down well! Eventually we had to reluctantly leave the stage to be replaced by the much improved Acidseed who also played very well but we were all put to shame by the Norwich band the mustard bandits who played a rocking set of pop-punk tunes! If you havent heard any of their stuff then I suggest you download some of their mp3s! Gigs like this dont come along every day, but if they do then put me down for a lifetime supply!
Set-Manga theme, Would you like some cheese?, I am the one and only, Comic shop guy, Neverending story, Kickback, Squeal, 15 second song, the A school of punk, hurry up harry, white lightning
Venue-Park Hotel, Diss Date-February 15th, 2002
Bands-Roach, Guest, Cheesegrater
Review- Definetly a gig best forgotten! After turning up at five 0'clock for a soundcheck we were made to wait around for 3 hours before finally playing without a soundcheck! Also the ticket price was raised from 3 pound to 5 pound and the opening time was set back without any notice despite adverts appearing in local newspapers stating the original ticket price and opening time! Generally this was the most unfriendly gig ever with many other problems unfolding as the night went on! So it was that cheesegrater made their appearance, all the band very pissed off apart from stebbs who countered being pissed off by just getting pissed! Needless to say we played terribly with only hardcore cheesegrater fans(friends) getting any amount of joy from the gig! The sound was shit, we couldnt be arsed, the atmosphere was dead and they didnt even turn the lights down for a dark punky atmosphere. In short, we sucked. Although I am pleased to say that I did get some respect from some very pissed bloke who staggered up to me afterwards and told me we ruled....he was very very pissed though!
Set-Manga theme, Would you like some cheese?, I am the one and only, Comic shop guy, Neverending story, Kickback, Squeal, White Lightning, 15 second song, Hurry up harry.
Venue-Hartismere High School
Date-November 16th, 2001
Bands-Electronic Teabag, Cheesegrater, Acidseed
Review- A warm up gig at a Hartismere band night was thought to be the best idea, as the cheese had been out of action for about half a year since the previous gig and were now joined by Matt Taylor on lead guitar so the new lineup was untested. Also playing were Cheesegraters sister band Acidseed a nu-metal outfit who were the first band of the night and played a rocking first gig, showing a lot of promise. Cheesegrater took to the stage next and...oh my god! We actually played a good gig, mistakes were made of course and a half arsed version of "kill emo!" lowered the quality temporarily, but overall the set seemed to entertain the assembled mosh pit (despite about 3 songs being titled "greg is gay") and with stage diving antics from Taylor and Stebbs, and Baileys vocal debut on the punk cover of Hotel Yorba adding to the fun it was hard to not get carried along by the punky flow and think that one day we might actually be considered a "real" band!
Set-Manga theme, Would you like some cheese?, I am the one and only, Comic shop guy, Neverending story, Kickback, Squeal, Hotel Yorba, Kill emo, 15 second song (twice), White lightning
Venue-North Lopham Village Hall Date-some time in late 2000 or maybe early 2001 (can't remember)
Bands-Cheesegrater, Holy Cow, Taxi Driver Nigel, Willow
Review- An early, overambitious headlining slot for the cheese, playing above already well established bands, Willow and Taxi Driver Nigel must go down as one of the definitive cheesegrater gigs. The first two bands played well, with Taxi Driver Nigels set featuring a guest vocal slot from American twat Andus (or Anders, i dunno how to spell it), possibly the most hated person I've ever met! A pre-Taylor cheesegrater took to the stage at bout ten 0'clock proudly sporting a set of classic cheesegrater tunes and some that are best forgotten. The mistake of letting cheesegrater play so late in the night, however, became painfully obvious early on as the band staggered around blindly for about 5 minutes trying to find their instruments in a drunken haze! What followed was a drunken shambles which can only be described as a gig in the loosest possible way. Alex(then the bassist) fell over and didnt get back up again, Greg(then on drums) left halfway through a song to get a beer and then just left, Stebbs(minus the guitar at this point) wandered off with his girlfriend and Bailey got stuck on the intro to white lightning. Overall this was how the first cheesegrater gig was meant to be. Some say we sold out after this gig!
Proposed set- Would you like some cheese?, White Lightning, ATF, I met a martian and he told me that space invaders was for real, Townie Love, I met an Australian transvestite and my girlfriend got his phone number and our lead wonker fancied him, The hobo rap, Grandfather Clock
Actual Set- Would you like some cheese?, White Lightning(intro only)
